trouble leaving
August 8, 2005
Leaving the island is proving more difficult than I expected. Not ‘psychologically difficult’, or any such soft nonsense – it’s just that events seem to be conspiring to keep me here. Although my job finished last week, I was going to wait until today to move to Naha, because the weekend just gone was meant to be this island’s biggest festival of the year. However, a typhoon intervened, and the festival was postponed to next weekend, which means I am still on island, and will be for another week. Not having any particular commitments, it makes more sense to stay on island and get a bit more taiko practice in than to rush off to the mainland just because I’ve now got a flat there. On Thursday night, though, I am playing an acoustic set at a live house on the mainland with members of the ripping Okinawan metal band Tetsukabuto, so I’m going to move my stuff over on Thursday, then come back on Friday for some final taiko practice before the festival. On Monday – barring further typhoons / acts of God, I will leave the island properly, and move to the mainland.

Haven’t been on your site for a while, glad to see you are still posting; the comments feature is a very nice addition. Have a good time, wherever you are.

Hey Cecile,
Thanks! I am having an excellent time in Naha, Okinawa at the moment, and going to Osaka and Kyoto tomorrow. Until today, I’ve been frustratingly unable to post anything since leaving the island, due to my internet connection being struck by lightning…
Hope you’re doing well too, wherever you are!

Hello May!
Great to hear from you! Hope you’re settling in ok!
I’m having a great time on the mainland. Now I’m in another all-night manga / internet place in the centre of Kobe. Tomorrow I’m heading north to a very rural area to visit a friend and spend a few days doing nothing much. I’m looking forward to it.
Gosh, how I moved my archives… it’s a little complicated and it involves various acronyms like PHP and XML, and writing a little computer programme that could absorb the old lightvesselautomatic, mull it over a bit, and then regurgitate it into WordPress’s own database. I can go into more detail in an email, if detail be needed!
Please do write more soon! Comments make me happy. I was getting bored with monologging into the crackling electronic ether.

I think you could have got away with that typo: I had to read the original about six times before I spotted the difference! I’m sure someone’s written their masters on exactly that effect.
I will be adding pictures retrospectively as soon as I get a moment!
Good luck with the progress report. And the progress!
